Sylvia Ortiz

Red Hook artist Tommy Kane

So one summer day I was hanging in Red Hook visiting Donato Giancola and I bumped into this other artist who was doing a a cool drawing of an old trolly that was parked and out of use for a long time. I didnt know it at the time, But this artist was one of the major designers behind the Steve Madden shoes back in the days. Small world!

Surreal art

I don't do much surreal art but I wanted to give it an go. This process has gave me a opportunity to do something of a personal matter. Back in August 2015 my lovely friend Sylvia Ortiz crossed over, after a long battle with cancer. She was a great artist and awesome human being. She mothered me with lots of love and spoke bluntly on my work like the Puerto Rican sister she was. She was one of the first people I associated with, back in my early Virginia days and the chemistry we shared was rock solid. The morning after I came back from the hospital visit I had a dream, In this dream I remember sketching in a empty room with stairs leading upward. At the bottom of the stairs a black dress was floating with no human body with-in it. The dress floated all around me and it then grabbed a white blanket, and covered me - pushing me back onto a bed in the next room. I was tucked into the bed like a child but I could't see the one doing this. I felt some spirit shaking me, as if …

teaching art

So I haven't posted much lately due to some deadlines i had for shows and commission work. But what has taken more of my time has been an art teaching gig I picked up for the summer at

Although I had thoughts about teaching before, but never really put any effort behind it. Now that I have experienced it , I gained a new respect for the craft.  Showing other people how paint  and its application has brought me a lot of joy, to see adults and kids create things, especially when they  doubted themselves.
Especially the older crowed, there is a joy that comes from them when ever I show them a new brush technique, new to them...because no one taught them these basic things.
It has made me interested in taking this new ball and running with it all the way to some colleges. who knows, I could be an influence to some future artists. We will see.

Black porno

My very first Porno movie was of Black lesbians when I was about 10-11 years old. This was in the days of the VHS craze, when everyone was recording movies from cable TV and duplicating movie rentals (against the FBI warnings)..I guess you an call me an Home movie pirates. Anyway's- my exposure to this was like finding some magical treasure..I was astonished to find out what woman vaginas can do..and what they looked like. That type of knowledge at such an early age played a huge role in my social interactions, I would paralyze the other boys with questions like ( did you know, black pussies are pink inside? ) oh sure its funny now as an adult, but as a child it was like I had skipped a few grades. That seed that was laid would now be what my erotic art is as of today.

sometimes disney does it right!

I love the subtle adult jokes in these

west coast feel

Go west young man!
That was what the voice in my head said as I packed up my stuff.
This side of the country has a large art community and I felt it was time to start making some moves. One of my curators -Andrea Garcia has presented me a oppertunity to slide my way into this intetesting side of the world. I only been here a few days and I met some interesting people and some fantastic art. I was able to make my way to the LA art show which was pretty impressive and the LaLuz de jesus gally which was equally impressive, , the place is just a treasure of art material and books.
One of the things I was finally was able to experince was a jack in the box meal. Yes, yes. I know ..what so interesting about that...well I never seen one on the east coast..I had their sirloin burger..and it was freaking delicous. East coast needs to watch out, these burgers are fucking awesome. Anyways heres some pictures of some stuff and some pictures of art I created to show while I am here.
